Senate Proclamation –
Fl Nathan Smith Spotlight

January 20,2020 marked the 5th “I Am King” seminar held in Harlem, New York. This year, “I Am King” recognized Fl. Nathan Smith Sr., Vice President of the Westchester Graduate Chapter of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship Inc., with a Senate Proclamation.

Fl. Nathan Smith Sr., was born and raised in the Bronx, New York where he was formally educated in NYC’s public schools and learned early on that he wanted to serve others. After high school, Smith enrolled at Iona College to study psychology and health counseling and became involved in community service by organizing projects and fundraisers, delivering food to the homebound AIDS patients, and volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle. While attending Iona, Smith became integrated in the cause of helping black children to excel in their academics.

This ultimately lead him to obtain a Master’s degree in advanced generalist practice and programming from Columbia University’s School of Social Work and became a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City’s Juvenile Justice Program. He later was appointed Youth Program Director and Manager of the intake department at The Door in SoHo. This impressive resume of service to NYC’s youth is further exemplified as Mr. Smith went on to hold many other positions of note including, becoming the founding School Social Worker at the KIPP STAR College Prep Charter School in Harlem and founding Director of Counseling Services KIPP Through College. Currently, Nathan is employed at Harlem Village Academies as the Director of Student & Family Affairs.

About I Am King

I AM KING brings black male youth together to share space, receive guidance, and to be inspired by successful black male adults. Via a seminar format, the adults share their successes, positive outlooks, mistakes, gifts, talents, and abilities with the young men.

Through these interactive sessions with the adult men, each young man is inspired to recognize his uniqueness and to be proud of who he is. By participating in I AM KING, each young man explores his existence by focusing his mind and attention on a new story for himself. His story becomes one of positive self-regard that he defines for himself and not one defined by others.
